1994: a year to remember

1994 seems to be a highly significant year in terms of changing attitudes and generational shifts.

Why? The infographic shows the highlights which are explained below.

1. Regular visitors to this site will know the writer Mark Simpson. We appreciate his work and mention it frequently. Mark, founder of the metrosexual, is where we start explaining this blogpost’s infographic. In 1994 Simpson came up with the term metrosexual: a dandyish narcissist in love with not only himself but also his urban lifestyle…. Mark Simpson invented this term in 1994 [in the Independent], but it has been picked up by numerous media outlets, including the Observer, the Herald and Maclean’s magazine. So, 1994 is the year of birth of the metrosexual.

2. Kurt Cobain, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the grunge band Nirvana, died in 1994. Nirvana was labeled “the flagship band” of Generation X, and Cobain hailed as “the spokesman of a generation”. Punk, Rock and Grunge are not exactly what hits the mind whilst thinking of dandyish narcissism. In other words, 1994 marks generations.

3. So far we have discussed 1994 and how it happens to be related to changes in mentalities, generations and lifestyles (The Metrosexual, Kurt Cobain). Back to the year 1994. This is the official start of the metrosexual century. Guess who was born? Yes, welcome to the world: Justin Baby-boy Bieber! Is it reincarnation? To be doubted. Anyway, Justin represents the very first generation metrokids. He has grown up to be an icon and is a lifestyle example for kids at schoolyards all over the world. Although he has not been raised by a metrosexual generation it leaves no doubt there appears to be a stylist involved in his look. But, it is not all about style. It’s also about mentality changes over time.

The book Dossier Supertrends (Carl Rohde, Norbert Mirani, Goos Eilander) shows a convincing graph that the mentality of males and females has been growing towards each other for more than a decade. Please notice: this does not mean that male mentality integrates more feminine aspects but also vice versa.

Hannibal from the A-Team would have said something like: I love it when a plan comes together. Cool! Or is it coincidence? 1994: Remarkable it is.

With the approval of Mark Simpson.
